This blog post includes entries from week 10 to week 14, focusing on our Arduino group projects and ending off with an entry of our Demo Day.
Week 10: 06/12/2023
Project Proposal
During our lecture this week we were introduced to the group project that we needed to complete and present by the end of January 2024. Dr Judhi went over a few guidlines for the project as well as a few dos and don'ts.
Towards the end of class time we managed to form a group of 5 students. We then went around to hear each team member's project ideas and gave feedback for each.
A few of the ideas pitched by our team members:
smart home system
smart photo booth
smart fish tank system
By the end of our lesson, we had all agreed to go with the smart fish tank system.
Week 11: 13/12/2023
Working on Project
Week 11 was our last week of term before Winter Break. This week we continued to work on our group projects. As of last week we has decided to create a smart fish tank system. We used our class time this week to complete our project proposal.
Nafisa and I were assigned to doing creative work, both physical and digital.
I contributed to our proposal by creating a logo for our group as well as doing the design drawing for our prototype outlook.
This week we solidified our project ideas and put together a proposal of our project.
We completed the following:
designated roles to each team member
drew up our gantt chart
finalised our project logo
completed our design drawings
submitted our project proposal
Winter Break: 20/12/2023 - 15/01/2024
25 December 2023
Today I decided to take a trip to Dragon Mart in hopes of finding a good fish tank for our group project. The shopping centre was as busy as always but I finally managed to locate a store that sold aquarium equipment.
There were many different kinds of fish tanks but we opted to use a small and simple glass tank.
I also purchased a faux fish that looks a bit too real as well as some tank pebbles and an LED light that I hope we can manipulate to work with our circuitry.
8 January 2024
Today was our first in-person group meeting after we broke away for the winter break. I brought along the fish tank and other items needed that I managed to source for our group. I met with two other group members on campus and we used the time to gather our current items, work on the design of the tank as well as review our project to make sure that we were on track with our Gantt chart. I also designed a few background options to use for our tank.
As of now we have completed 30% of our project:

Here are some of the designs I have created as tank background options for my group mates to choose from:
Week 12: 17/01/2023
Working on Project
This week we worked on the design and implementation of our project. I had the opportunity to use my digital design skills as I volunteered to create the video of our project demonstration.
I also worked closely on the physical design, component positioning and overall aesthetic of our tank and Nafisa lent a helping hand too.
Week 13: 24/01/2023
Working on Project
We used this week to add the final touches to our project, consolidate our idea, complete our report and troubleshoot any issues.

Week 14: 31/01/2023
Demo Day
Demo day was stressful but rewarding. We agreed to arrive to university before 7 AM to attach the new lightbulb since our LED light stand stopped working. We managed to configure the new light bulb before presentation time.
The entire event was greatly enjoyable. It was wonderful to interact with other groups and learn about their creations as well as listen to their on-stage presentations. Furthermore, it was rewarding to promote our project and explain our ideas and concept to students within the faculty of CEI as well as students from other fields of study!
At the end of the past few weeks, our project was not 100% perfect. However we embrace its flaws and used them as points of learning and improvement! The entire experience was super fun but also quite stressful and I am so grateful to MDX for giving us this amazing opportunity!
